The ending of the movie is quite surreal and open-ended. Edward Lourdes (played by Jack Nicolson), a mentally ill man living in an imaginary town called 'Waterville', embarks on this journey with his friends to find what's known as Black Forest or black woods after having heated debates about life death survival issues among them During their perilous yet enlightening trip through these mysterious dangerous places they learn some valuable lessons grow up somewhat but when finally reaching that fabled village hidden deep within those dark forests our heroes discover it’s inhabited not monsters nor beasts –but rather friendly oddball folks who also happen suffer from mental illnesses like Edward himself thus forming one big crazy dysfunctional family together at last! Upon returning home however things don't seem so rosy anymore; because despite all adventures & revelations Ed gets carted off back into reality towards hospitalization...thus leaving us viewers wondering just how much was real anyway?
